UK gov DfT 'invested £8.8m' on devices to propel hybrid working

The Department for Transport (DfT) has invested £8.8 million in devices since July 2019 to help ‘propel’ hybrid working, according to research by think tank Parliament Street.

Research retrieved via the Freedom of Information (FOI) act and analysed by the think tank, showed that the DfT spent the sum on laptops – at £2.9 million of the investment – and smartphones, at £5.9 million.

Research obtained from the FOI act also showed that the DfT spent £4.4 million on smartphones as part of a “smartphone refresh” for the department between July 2021 and June 2022.

The news comes during a summer which has seen a number of rail network strikes resulting in widespread disruption of England’s transport network.

Commenting on the findings, Achi Lewis, area vice president EMEA of Absolute Software, said: “With the transport sector being such a mobile industry, it is important that staff have a means of staying connected and online in a work from anywhere world, and the DfT should be commended for their investment in this area.”
